Once a grand cultural venue and later a long-abandoned relic, the 1927 Carolina Theatre has been transformed through a multi-year restoration into a signature civic landmark in the heart of Uptown Charlotte. The project included the renovation of the original 36,000-square-foot historic theater and the addition of a 6,700-square-foot modern lobby that reconnects the building to North Tryon Street and expands its functionality for contemporary performances and events.
Stewart provided civil engineering design for all site work associated with the theater renovation and adjacent hotel development. Our scope included:
-
Site design & construction documents for all civil components
-
Roadway and streetscape improvements along Sixth Street and Tryon Street
-
Due diligence, research, permitting, and rezoning support
-
Utility coordination, including relocation of Duke Energy transformers and switchgear to a new exterior location
Through thoughtful site design and complex urban coordination, Stewart helped enable the safe, modern reopening of one of Charlotte’s most historic cultural venues.
