Wake Tech Community College Hendrick Center for Automotive Excellence

Stewart led the site design for the redevelopment of an existing parking lot into a 100,000-square-foot campus education building at the northern border of Wake Tech Community College’s Scott Northern Wake Campus. Because the site is situated across a major thoroughfare, reinforcement of the connection back to the heart of campus was paramount to the design and location of the building. In addition to civil engineering and landscape architecture, Stewart also provided survey and SUE services including topographic, boundary, utility, right-of-way and easement platting.

The Hendrick Center for Automotive Excellence educational building is unique for several reasons: 1) the program stores automobiles for repair and instruction, which necessitated a large service yard screened for noise utilizing a gabion wall berm, 2) industry partners host job fairs and showcase new vehicles, so the site features a drivable showcase entry plaza, and 3) the program includes classrooms, shops, break out spaces and faculty offices, resulting in a multi-level faceted architectural design. Site design concepts took all of these constraints into consideration.
