Durham Belt Line Trail Master Plan

Stewart worked with the City of Durham and the Conservation Fund to develop a multi-disciplinary master plan for a 1.75-mile greenway and linear park through the heart of Downtown Durham. The project included the development of a vision and goals for the project, cross-section and structure evaluation, roadway analysis, park concept plans, furnishing recommendations, and a design and planting palette. The design contains elements for crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED), redevelopment and land use strategies, restoration of natural systems and plant communities, as well as recommendations for housing and open space equity. Cost estimates, a funding strategy, a programming strategy and locations for the preservation of structures associated with the trail’s history are included in the plan. Stewart’s extensive public outreach approach gathered input from more than 800 citizens and included stakeholder interviews, surveys, pop-up events, a community workshop, and a public open house. The plan also includes graphics and illustrations for proposed facilities, new trail connections, crosswalks, and safety-oriented intersection treatments.

The Master Plan was adopted by the Durham City Council enabling Durham to purchase the corridor right-of-way and move forward with design in late 2018. Stewart also worked with the City and partners to develop the USDOT BUILD grant application for the project.
