Keeley Park Master Plan Update and Renovation

Keeley Park is a 114-acre regional park located in McLeansville in northeast Greensboro. Stewart prepared an update to the 2007 master plan so the City could apply for a 2016 Parks and Recreation Trust Fund grant. The Phase I development features a playground, two picnic shelters, sprayground, greenhouse, community garden, trails, five ponds, restrooms, maintenance building, and two parking areas. The Urban Loop crossed the eastern boundary and reduced the park acreage by 20 acres. Other conditions that impacted the site were two high-voltage power lines and a well/septic system that serves the park. The updated master plan reflects new park elements: outdoor fitness node, beginning and intermediate level mountain bike trails, corn hole tournament node, dog park, amphitheater, multi-purpose field, disc golf, and inclusive playground. Renovations and expansions include additional trails, shelters, community gardens, and shade sails.

Phase 2 implementation of Keeley Park included detailed design and construction of most elements in the updated masterplan. The most notable is the new Up In The AIR playground, Greensboro’s first fully inclusive playground. We worked with the City of Greensboro to apply for both PARTF and LWCF funding and the project received a $250,000 LWCF grant. The project is also a National Demonstration Site for the 2019 North Carolina Recreation and Park Association’s Healthy Play and Recreation Initiative, a funding and educational partnership between NCRPA, GameTime, Cunningham Recreation and PlayCore. The park opened to the public in December 2020. Stewart coordinated with the City of Greensboro and multiple play equipment providers to see this great new park through successful design and construction.
