UNC Medical Center, in partnership with UNC School of Medicine, is the only state-owned teaching hospital in North Carolina. When complete, the project will be the largest building on UNC Medical Center’s campus and will also give UNC Health Care an opportunity to enhance its existing infrastructure.

After considerable planning, the Surgical Tower was placed directly in front of the NC Memorial Hospital. This location provides patients and families easy access to surgical services and creates a more modern façade. The new tower is replacing aging facilities with larger and more efficient operating suites as surgeries have grown more complex and require larger teams. The Tower consists of seven stories including the basement and is approximately 343,000 square feet.

The project also includes two pedestrian bridges spanning Manning Drive – one spanning from the Dental School and one from the Surgical Tower, and a new canopy to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The Terrace Café, a new two-story building, will provide much-needed respite for visitors and staff, and is being constructed inside the existing courtyard space of Memorial Hospital.

In order to expedite the project delivery, multiple bid phases were utilized including early site, early foundations, pedestrian bridge packages, and building packages.
