The Town of Boone hired Stewart to determine the feasibility of constructing a multi-use path along the north side of US 421 from Brookshire Park and the Greenway Trail along the South Fork New River to Grove Street. The path will extend the existing sidewalk network one mile east, connecting residential apartment dwellers and greenway users to businesses along US 421/E King Street and downtown Boone. The objective of the study was to determine a proposed alignment and engineer’s opinion of cost for consideration by Town Council to submit to High Country Rural Planning Organization and NC Department of Transportation for funding in the 2019-2029 State Transportation Improvement Program.
Within a three-month period, Stewart conducted field observations and corridor surveys and developed recommended cross-sections in addition to laying out two potential corridor alignments. Our engineers then drafted conceptual horizontal and vertical designs for each alignment in order to produce cost estimates and advise the Town on the likelihood of project funding through the NCDOT SPOT process. Based on the alignments, estimates, and scoring analysis, the Boone Town Council approved the submission of the project to NCDOT for funding and is budgeting for its inclusion in the next NCDOT Transportation Improvement Program.
