Western Carolina University Tom Apodaca Science Building

This Apodaca Science Building supports teaching and research, community outreach, and professional partnerships in an integrated, state-of-the-art facility. The building structure offers a unique, flexible configuration that promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, student engagement, and community connections for a program that consists of a 150-person lecture hall, teaching labs, research labs, classrooms, office, support spaces, and a rooftop plaza for astronomy observations, and a greenhouse. The project also included the demolition of the Natural Sciences Building and existing courtyard site elements to expand and redefine the built environment to reinforce the holistic learning environment program. The new building provides more than 182,000 square feet of lab and classroom space. Construction was phased to allow for the existing laboratories in NSB to stay operational until they could be relocated to Phase I of the new building. After existing operations were relocated to Phase I, NSB was demolished for the construction of Phase II.
